[RFID-Reader] Increase reading range??? Please help!!

Hi all,

I currently have a cat mate super selective cat flap that uses rfid tags on the collars to know when one of my cats is trying to open the cat flap and unlocks.
The only problem is is that the range is very short and dependant on where the tag is on the collar depends on whether it opens or not.

Ive tried getting new tags and changing the cat flaps batteries, but the problem remains. Is there anything i can add/ take away to increase the range of the reader and stop getting wet patches in the morning?

Any help would be grateful

Dear All,

I'm an IT student and yesterday I had a conversation with my friend a transportation engineer. We talk about Electronic Road Pricing and I was shocked that most ERP implementation (Ex: Singapore) use a much expensive Active Tag rather than just a cheaper passive tag. I wonder why? Passive tag are easier to implement, cheaper and smaller while active tag need those bulky On Board Unit.

If the problem is distance I don't think that it's a problem. Because AFAIK standard passive tag could read typically up to 3 meters. Some googling I did show that it is very possible for some passive tags to reach 10-15 meters.

If the problem is speed, I just found a lot of passive tag that are able to read until 300km/h. Just like what I found on this source :

http://www.ipico.com/site/ipico/assets/pdf/IP-PROD-XTRO-170x10ENP-20070309-1.pdf

So what do you guys think? What are the negative and positive side of Passive Tags for ERP?

Thank you :D

[RFID-Reader] UHF RFID Reader using RSSI to select I or Q channel

Hi everyone,

I'm doing an UHF RFID Reader (Class1Gen2). It will be tested on a FPGA platform.
So, I have a doubt about using RSSI to select between channels I and Q.
I'm sending a Querry command and created a module to emulate the tag response (FM0) with a preamble + RN16, but I don't know the exact moment I have to choose the better channel.
I use two RSSI modules that read the samples (from an ADC) of each channel and calculates the power of the signals. But I don't know how they could calculate it without loosing any data.
So, I implemented an architecture that sums the samples of both channels during preamble read and at the end of it the better channel is chosen to decode RN16 data.
Do you have any idea if this solution is good? I didn't find any reference that could explain me how it is done on commercial Readers. Do you have any reference?

I was thinking to put channel I as a default channel and only change to channel Q if it has a better SNR than channel I. I could do this measure just in a peace of th preamble. What do you think about this solution? Any better idea?
Thanks in advance

I have a fair few years of embedded coding experience with serial protocols such as CANbus, but RF is totally new to me.

I have a test setup working with a CPU (Texas MSP430F2274) which interfaces to a PCD (Philips MFRC522). I am running some example code on the Texas CPU which allows me to detect a PICC when I wave it near to the PCD antenna.

Now I need to modify the code to handle collisions so that if I put two PICCs next to the antenna I can detect both of the RFIDs on the PICCs.

I found that the Error Register (page 2, register 6) has a bit 3 that as set to 1 when there is a collision, but other than that I'm totally lost. Can anyone please help?

I have a fair few years of embedded coding experience with serial protocols such as CANbus, but RF is totally new to me.

I'm looking for some help to understand the protocol.

So far so good............

The trouble is that the code is undocumented so I'm trying to fathom out how it works. I've managed to figure out how the CPU gets the PCD to transmit data @ 13.56MHz, but I dont understand the data that is being transmitted.

For example, the code has a comment that is simply "Anti Collision" and it would appear that the code is getting the MFRC522 to transmit two bytes: 0x93, 0x20.

I googled this and I think it might be a "1443A Pass through ANTICOLLISION request", but I'm not sure.

Can anyone shed any light on it? Is there a list of all these messages in a document somewhere?

Model No. NFC-9801
It can read and write fast-moving tag in long range for its integrative designing with built-in 12dbi high gain antenna. We originated controling lauching power separately in domestic that adapt to complex application circumstance. It can be operated in FHSS or fixed frequency and own super anti-interference ability. There are all kinds of communication interfaces and you can customize too.

1. Function brief introduction
Support multi-protocol: 9801 interrgator supports ISO18000-6B, EPC Class 1, EPC Class 1 GEN 2 standard, and also support many protocols and function expanding by through upgrading interrogator's software.
Label capability optimizing: Serial interrgators can optimize Label's operating used far-ranging. It uses different labels' expanding function to enhance the price-quality ratio of system's applying.
Out off line function: The interrogator is designed with nonvolatile memory place. When the interrogator fail to communicate with applying suetem, it can memory identified ID Label into the interrgator to make sure the system is stable.

ID match function: The interrogator is designed with nonvolatile memory place. In a close applying system, it can memory ID Label into the interrgator in advance. When the interrogator indentifies Label ID, It can compare with the ID memoried the local PC, then depending on the result, it can run the interrgator's predefining or user designing'action.

Synchronization function: In practice, many interrgators must be installed a near place, to make sure the reliability when interrgators working, serial interrgators were designed especially with synchronization function to make sure the reliability of identifying label and reading rate.

Time function: There is real-time clock within interrgator, which can setup and read interrgator's time, identify time-stamp function under out off line. It can exactly satisfy the applying design that uses were sensitive for time.
Input and output function: The interrgator is designed 2-way triggering input, which can identify the label when occuring outer things to satisfy green environment protecting and decrease energy consuming. It is especial suitable for parking port and producing line manegement. It is designed 2-way relay output, which user can use for outer controling so that saving user's cost of applying system designed. User can transfer and control relay's switch status through the API function of -interrgator SDK and also can customize the controling relationship according to the number of indentified Label ID.
Launching power separated control: Can setup separated every channel's launching power to meet applying and installing's complexity, which is the first designed and created in internal country.
